A Hot Vax Summer?
Having spent a year and a half being homebound and mostly alone, I began preparing to make up for the lost social time. Summer 2021 was going to be fabulous! I began arranging travel plans to an island with clear blue water and sand beneath my feet.
Girls Night Out was officially back on. And I do a daily online search for upcoming concerts, comedy shows, and theatre showings.
After all, I had done my part, followed the CDC guidelines, and gotten vaccinated. And that herd immunity* I had been hearing so much about should be kicking in right about…. Now!
Now?
Now?
But it was not to be so easy. The destination of the herd splintered in many directions.
That once high demand for vaccinations slowed to a trickle.
3,500 of what the FAA refers to as ‘airline and airport incidents involving unruly passengers,” or “air rage” has occurred since January. At the time of this publication, over 100 of these “incidents” happened this week alone.
And by “incidents,” there are fistfights, spitting, pushing, shoving, noses are broken, teeth knocked out, and an onslaught of bad behavior.
But okay, I have packed my boxing gloves in my carry-on luggage so while a little wary, I am not deterred.
But wait! Who opened the door for Delta, another COVID variant that is affecting the unvaccinated at alarming rates. Over 50% of all new cases are caused by this variant and hospitalizations and unfortunately, deaths are once again rising.
For the vaccinated, there is a chance of a breakthrough which is being infected by Covid but with very minimal symptoms. Minimal or not, I prefer to skip that experience.
Masks mandates remain at many indoor public facilities.
Here it is, the last few days of July 2021 and while I have enjoyed being outside and seeing vaccinated family and friends without a mask, I still wear one indoors at public locales.
Covid isn’t over and no one seems to know when it will be. In the meantime, be safe for yourself, family, friends, and the community.
My Hot Vax Summer has become a Hot Vax Day at a Time. But that’s okay. After all, it’s still summer and I feel the ocean calling my name.
